The "FISHIN' BUDDIES!” Youth Fishing Club is an organization of professional, minority men and women who share,
* an immutable concern for the air, land and waters of our planet along with a concurrent spiritual and emotional commitment to restoring and preserving the natural environment;
* an understanding of the necessity of using education and physical work to accomplish these goals;
* a realization that the emotional, physical and mental involvement of children is essential to ensuring that these goals and ideals will continue into new generations;
* a dedication to imparting to these children an understanding of their place in the earth’s natural environment that transcends school and involves an education and appreciation acquired through physical and mental labor;
* a belief in the emotional, physical and psychological restorative powers of the natural environment, in the importance of exposing this philosophy to children whose idea of the great outdoors is the grassless, glass strewn, debris filled, concrete and steel playgrounds of urban America.
* and a belief in teaching the value of a personal sense of honesty and integrity through parental and adult guidance;
"FISHIN' BUDDIES!" believes that through the competitive activities of environmental restoration work and fishing trips, another path of life is revealed. These activities demand no athletic skills, no special talents, and little money. While many young men and women may wish to “be like Mike", very few ever will. With restoration work, fishing, or a simple walk in the country - patience, discipline, and an education - are developed, and rewarded. In God's Outdoors, all are welcome and all can do well.
The "FISHIN' BUDDIES!" Youth Fishing Club had its origins in 1991 with as the South Suburban Bassmasters. The SSBM was an organization of Black, professional men and women who loved the art and sport of Largemouth Bass fishing.
Mr. John Kidd, Jr., President of SSBM, wished to expand that group's mission to include the teaching of Bass fishing to children. "FISHIN' BUDDIES!" has since greatly expanded its mission and range of activities to include; environmental and ecological concerns, activities, and education, and to providing summer and part-time work environmental restoration programs for teenagers
September 23, 1991 - The South Suburban Bassmasters, under the direction of John Kidd, hosts its 1st Annual Youth Fishing Derby at Wolf Lake in Chicago, Illinois. 127 children, aged 7 - 17, participate.
